Iceland tourism prides itself on innovation and creating new adventures that push up expectations of what you can do on your holiday. New Zealand was all over bungee jumping, leading the world with adventure….but that baton surely needs to pass to Iceland.

The latest Icelandic adventure to tickle your adrenaline is a tour inside a Volcano. The dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano (yeah, good luck trying to pronounce it!) is a unique natural phenomenon. By putting up the necessary gear and equipment,  the tour opens the door to a new world. And it isn’t too complicated to do it. All you need is the willingness to finish a moderate 45-50 minute hike (to get to the crater) and the guts to decend 120 meters/400 ft to the bottom of the crater in an open cable lift.

To give you an idea of the height (120 m ) the ride is around 2 ½ times the height of the Statue of Liberty. You arrive into a vast 50 x 70 metre cavern that is lit by large floodlights that create plenty of light to view the psychedelic colours and formations covering the chamber walls. You have about an hour in the volcano, plenty of time to explore and take photos.

It’s a breathtaking adventure like no other, an exciting, educational and awe-inspiring journey to the depths of an environment that is unexplored in the  tourism sense.

You need to be quick however with this adventure, it is only offered for a very limited time this European summer. Combine it with a week’s Iceland self-drive or group tour and you have a fantastic Icelandic Adventure.
