50 Degrees North

Northern Winter Holiday News

We have had a lovely time reading feedback from our Winter travellers. Here is a short note that we received this week with lovely photos attached. The adventure was a self drive around Northern Sweden and it sounds amazing.

“Our quick trip up north was absolutely wonderful and we were fortunate to witness very strong activity of the Northern Lights in Abisko. Unfortunately the temperatures were far too low to visit the Aurora Sky Station but we walked up behind the hotel for a couple of hours and saw a great show. In fact, it was just magical walking though the snow laden forest in the moonlight. It’s an unbelievably beautiful sight, especially for us Aussies!

Our best temperature was 37 below, crazy stuff – your eyelashes freeze immediately, that’s mental.

The Ice Hotel was also pretty spectacular and the Tree Hotel….Wow! Our quick visit to Stockholm left us wanting more too. I can’t believe how beautiful that city is and we were lucky enough to arrive during their design and architecture week and also fashion week. It was buzzing with creative events. Thanks for your choice of Nobis, perfect!

Our accommodation in Jokkmokk was great and the hosts were lovely. We called in again on our way home for a cuppa and then dropped their niece off down in Kabdalis on our way to Harads. This was a great change to our plan because it caused us to drive across to Harads via a small arterial which passed through picture perfect scenery. (although listening to the GPS almost turned it into a disaster but we quickly rerouted and returned to safety!)

The driving was easier than expected and a good choice in the end because the low temperatures were causing transport and activity cancellations. When we arrived in Abisko there was little to do so we drove up to Narvik for the day and experienced some interesting “snow haze (?)” moments on the road. It gets a little scary when the winds pick up!

Thanks for your help organising such a fantastic last minute trip. It was perfect.”
