50 Degrees North

Photographing the Northern Lights

For all our travellers heading to the Northern Hemisphere to see the Aurora Borealis this winter, here are some tips to help you make the most of your photography efforts.

* There is no need for special clothing or gear – it is a good idea, however, to be overdressed for the occasion.

*The latest iPhones and some Android phones have apps that will show you the night sky and therefore, help you identify some of the star constellations that you might see.

*Use a tripod (with a remote button so you don’t touch the camera), a high ISO setting and a wide aperture to help create a professional finish to your photos.

* Try to include something of interest in the foreground of the photo to add depth and a visual reference.

* Good exposure times for photos are 20-40 seconds per picture (the tripod will help you eliminate shaking of the camera – you can’t hold the camera by hand.)

*Test your set up early and bring spare batteries. The cold temperature shorts the battery life.

* Don’t use filters as they distort the colours.

Good luck and hope the Northern lights luck is with you.
